I always saw myself as an entrepreneur, not an author.
I always saw myself as an entrepreneur, not an author.
I'd started a little food company out of my condo kitchen, preparing nutritious meals to help people lose weight. Over the next few years I grew the business gradually, began shipping food to customers in other states, and eventually across the entire country.

But when I moved into an industrial manufacturing facility, took on investors, and started private labeling meals and supplements for other health gurus...

..that's when things got interesting.

I started noticing these health "gurus” with millions of followers going on national TV telling people about a scientific study to promote their supplements (my supplements). I saw them publishing articles saying things like, “For a flat stomach eat these 5 superfoods," (my foods). There were all sorts of claims being made about the nutrition, the ingredients, the proven benefits, that I knew were all being made up.
I started noticing these health "gurus” with millions of followers going on national TV telling people about a scientific study to promote their supplements (my supplements). I saw them publishing articles saying things like, “For a flat stomach eat these 5 superfoods," (my foods). There were all sorts of claims being made about the nutrition, the ingredients, the proven benefits, that I knew were all being made up.
I tried going on the same shows, and publishing counter articles to debunk the myths. But nobody would listen because I wasn't a known guru (I was just the guy making the gurus' food).

To call it frustrating would be an understatement.

A friend suggested that I publish a book just like all these health experts were doing, to get the message out. I spent the next couple months pitching my book idea to literary agents (the people who help authors get publishing deals) and got rejected by every single one. "Not interested," "Not a good fit for me," "You don't have a big enough name," — these were the kinds of rejections I was getting.

After being told repeatedly that my story wasn't interesting enough, or that I didn't have a big enough social media following, for the first time in my adult life, I felt irrelevant.

Then I got a phone call...

The last agent I'd pitched (who had also rejected me) called to give some encouragement, "There's nothing wrong with your story," he said, " everyone has an interesting story. Your problem is you don't know how to package it."

After we got off the phone he sent me 4 book pitches — 2 that were bought and published, and 2 that had failed — and he told me to study the difference.

After months of dissecting and contrasting the various book pitches, it became clear why my initial concept had been destined to fail. Now equipped with that knowledge, I restructured my concept, re-mustered my confidence, and I reached out and pitched my new book idea.

The very next agent I pitched signed me immediately and got me a publishing deal.

The following year my book was in every Barnes & Noble in the country, and I was being chaperoned all over New York by a publicist to promote it.

Doors seemed to open automatically for me now. I was being invited on TV shows, getting flown across the country, being asked to speak at national conferences — it was surreal! Everything seemed to change for me overnight.

All I did was study and learn how to mold my story, and then package it into a marketable book.

That was my biggest takeaway: If this “molding & packaging” strategy worked for me, that means it can work for anyone — including you.

You don’t have to be an online celebrity, or have the most unique story in the world. You just have to tell your story or message in a way that fits into the marketplace.
